We believe in “Environmentally Intelligent” designUpdated a month ago
One of our goals is to be respectful stewards of the environment and the planet. With footwear, and performance footwear especially, there are limits to what we can do while still delivering the durability, function, and price our customers count on. So we try to make the smartest choices within those limits.
Why we say “intelligent” and not just “sustainable”
We’re careful not to jump on a “sustainable” material or method without looking at the bigger picture. Fleece made from recycled plastic bottles, for example, sounds like a clear win. Then researchers found that fleece sheds synthetic microfibers, tiny bits of plastic that end up in waterways and oceans. A good idea on paper isn’t always a good idea in practice.
That measured, long-term approach is what we mean by Environmentally Intelligent.
What that looks like in our shoes
- Fewer materials. Our minimalist designs use less material than conventional shoes, especially in our performance styles.
- Less energy to make. Simpler construction with no midsole layers means less energy in manufacturing.
- Soles that last. Most performance shoe brands recommend replacing shoes every 300 to 500 miles. Our soles are backed by a 5,000 Mile Sole Warranty, so one pair replaces many.
- Renewable materials where we can. We use materials like hemp whenever they meet our standards for durability and comfort.
We’re always looking for more and better ways to tread lightly while helping you Live Life Feet First.
