How do I make, or tie, my Genesis DIY Sandal Kit?Updated 25 days ago

The Genesis DIY Sandal Kit is the product that started Xero Shoes: you punch the holes, thread the cord, and tie your sandals to fit your own feet. Most people finish a pair in under an hour, and no two come out the same.

The easiest way to learn is to follow along: Genesis DIY Sandal Kit assembly video. It’s also embedded on the product page under “Step-By-Step Instructions.”

The 10 steps at a glance

  1. Punch the holes. Use the included hole punch to make three holes in the outsole.
  2. Make a stopper knot at one end of the cord so it won’t pull through the sole.
  3. Thread the cord through the toe hole, from bottom to top, with the knot on the bottom of the sole.
  4. Thread the cord through the outside ankle hole.
  5. Run the cord across the heel.
  6. Thread the cord through the inside ankle hole.
  7. Tie the main huarache knot, which secures the structure of the sandal.
  8. Create a second cord pass.
  9. Lace around the heel.
  10. Tie the final knot.

Then put the sandal on and adjust the cord tension until it feels secure and comfortable. Once the fit is right, you shouldn’t need to retie it. Just slip the heel strap on and off.

Choosing your sole

  • 4mm Connect gives you more ground feel. A men’s size 9 weighs about 3.7 oz (110 g).
  • 6mm Contact gives you a bit more cushioning. A men’s size 9 weighs about 5.4 oz (153 g).

Both come in Coal Black and Mocha Earth, and both are backed by our 5,000 Mile Sole Warranty.

Choosing your size

Measure from your heel to your longest toe and pick the closest size. When you’re between sizes, go up. You can trim the sole to the shape of your foot after you build, and it’s much easier to take a little more off than to put it back.

Choosing your cord

Cords all use the same durable material, so pick whatever color you like. Reflective options are available for a small additional charge. You can also add beads or charms to make the pair your own.

Trimming your sole

Trimming the outsole to match your foot is okay to fully customize the sandal, but take your time with it:

  • Trace your foot on the sole first so you have a line to follow.
  • Cut in small increments and try the sandal on between passes. A little at a time.
  • Leave a few millimeters outside your tracing rather than cutting right to the line.
  • Sharp scissors or a utility knife give a cleaner edge than dull ones.

Please note: once a kit has been punched, cut, or otherwise altered, it can no longer be returned or exchanged, and alterations aren’t covered under our warranty, including the 5,000 Mile Sole Warranty. If you cut too much off, we can’t replace the sole under warranty. Going slowly is the best insurance.

Common questions

  • Do I need any tools? No. The hole punch is included in the kit. Scissors are handy for trimming the cord.
  • What if I punch a hole in the wrong spot or cut too much off? Alterations aren’t covered under warranty, but you can buy a replacement FeelTrue outsole and start fresh.
  • Can I re-lace them later? Yes. The cord can be untied and redone as many times as you like, and replacement cordage is available.
  • Can I return a kit I’ve already started? No. Once the sole is punched or cut, the kit is no longer in new, unaltered condition. If something isn’t right, contact us before you start building.
