Understanding Stack Height in Xero ShoesUpdated 17 days ago
What Is Stack Height?
Stack height refers to the total amount of material between your foot and the ground.
For Xero Shoes, this measurement includes the outsole, midsole, any lugs, and built-in insoles, but does not include removable insoles. In simple terms, it reflects how much material is under your foot..
Why Stack Height Matters
Stack height helps explain how a shoe will feel when you wear it:
Lower stack height provides more ground feel and sensory feedback
Higher stack height offers more protection from terrain and impact
All Xero Shoes are designed to remain flexible and promote natural movement. Stack height simply gives you a better understanding of how minimal or protective a specific style may feel.
Typical Stack Height Range
Across our collection, stack heights generally range from:
4 mm to 13 mm --- Average stack height: approximately 8–9 mm
General Feel Guide:
4–6 mm
Very minimal, closest-to-barefoot feel7–9 mm
Balanced minimal feel (most common across styles)10–13 mm
Increased protection while still maintaining flexibility
What about the Removeable Insole?
These can be taken out or replaced and are not included in the stack height measurement.
They are typically thin, around 2–3 mm, and designed to provide a slight layer of comfort without significantly changing the natural feel of the shoe.
What About Boots?
Boots naturally have higher stack heights compared to sandals and lightweight shoes. This is by design to provide:
Added protection on rough or uneven terrain
Increased durability for outdoor use
Comfort for longer wear in more demanding conditions
Even with this added thickness, Xero Shoes boots are still built to be flexible and promote a natural feel compared to traditional footwear.
A Note on Fit and Feel
Stack height is only one factor that affects how a shoe feels. Because every foot is unique (and three-dimensional), other elements also play a role, including:
Materials
Upper construction
Lug pattern
Intended use (trail, road, or everyday wear)
